A.Does the language we speak determine how healthy and rich we will be?New research by Keith Chen of Yale Business School suggests so.The structure of languages affects our judgments and decisions about the future and this might have dramatic long-term consequences.
B.There has been a lot of research into how we deal with the future. For example, the famous marshmallow studies of Walter Mitchel and colleagues showed that being able to resist temptation is predictive of future success.Four-year-old kids were given a marshmallow and were told that if they do not eat that marshmallow and wait for the experimenter to come back, they will get two marshmallows instead of one.Follow-up studies showed that the kids who were able to wait for the bigger future reward became more successful young adults.
C.Resisting our impulses for immediate pleasure is often the only way to attain the outcomes that are important to us.We want to keep a slim figure but we also want that last slice of pizza. We want a comfortable retirement, but we also want to drive that dazzling car,go on that dream vacation,or get those gorgeous shoes. Some people are better at delaying gratification than others. Those people have a better chance of accumulating wealth and keeping a healthy life style. They are less likely to be impulse buyers or smokers.
D.Chen’s recent findings suggest that an unlikely factor, language, strongly affects our future-oriented behavior. Some languages strongly distinguish the present and the future.Other languages only weakly distinguish the present and the future.Chen’s recent research suggests that people who speak languages that weakly distinguish the present and the future are better prepared for the future. They accumulate more wealth and they are better able to maintain their health. The way these people conceptualize the future is similar to the way they conceptualize the present. As a result, the future does not feel very distant and it is easier for them to act in accordance with their future interests.
E.Different languages have different ways of talking about the future. Some languages, such as English,Korean, and Russian, require their speakers to refer to the future explicitly.Every time English speakers talk about the future, they have to use future markers such as“will”or“going to”.In other languages, such as Chinese,Japanese, and German, future markers are not obligatory. The future is often talked about similar to the way present is talked about and the meaning is understood from the context.A Chinese speaker who is going to go to a seminar might say“Wo qu ting jiang zuo”,which translates to“I go to a seminar”.Languages such as English constantly remind their speakers that future events are distant. For speakers of languages such as Mandarin future feels closer. As a consequence, resisting immediate impulses and investing for the future is easier for Mandarin speakers.
()F-26.According to the well-known marshmallow studies, people who can resist temptation tend to be successful in the future.
()F-27.The structure of languages influences us when we are making a judgment or decision about the future.
()F-28.In Chen’s recent research, people who speak languages in which the present and the future are weakly distinguished are more prepared for the future.
()F-29.Usually,preventing ourselves from enjoying immediate pleasure impulsively is the only way to achieve the outcomes that are important to us.
()F-30.People who speak languages like English are more likely to feel that the future events are distant.
正确答案:B;A;D;C;E
三、2026年秋江苏开放大学大学英语B2作业3综合题答案
1、Part III Reading comprehension(阅读理解题。包括4篇阅读材料,每篇阅读材料后有5个问题,请从选项中选出最佳答案。)
Passage One
It is easier to negotiate initial salary requirement because once you are inside, the organizational constraints influence wage increases. One thing, however,is certain:your chances of getting the raise you feel you deserve are less if you don’t at least ask for it.Men tend to ask for more, and they get more, and this holds true with other resources, not just pay increases.Consider Beth’s story:
“I did not get what I wanted when I did not ask for it.We had cubicle offices and window offices.I sat in the cubicles with several male colleagues. One by one they were moved into window offices, while I remained in the cubicles, several males who were hired after me also went to offices. One in particular told me he was next in line for an office and that it had been part of his negotiations for the job.I guess they thought me content to stay in the cubicles since I did not voice my opinion either way.”
It would be nice if we all received automatic pay increases equal to our merit, but“nice”isn’t a quality attributed to most organizations. If you feel you deserve a significant raise in pay, you’ll probably have to ask for it.
Performance is your best bargaining chip(筹码)when you are seeking a raise. You must be able to demonstrate that you deserve a raise.Timing is also a good bargaining chip.If you can give your boss something he/she needs(a new client or a sizable contract, for example)just before merit pay decisions are being made, you are more likely to get the raise you want.
Use information as a bargaining chip too.Find out what you are worth on the open market. What will someone else pay for your services?
Go into the negotiations prepared to place your chips on the table at the appropriate time and prepared to use communication style to guide the direction of the interaction.

2、Passage Two
New technology links the world as never before. Our planet has shrunk. It’s now a“global village”where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone or satellite link. And,of course, our ability to benefit from this high-tech communications equipment is greatly enhanced by foreign language skills.
Deeply involved with this new technology is a breed of modern business people who have a growing respect for the economic value of doing business abroad. In modern markets, success overseas often helps support domestic business efforts.
Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive ranks. The executive stationed in another country no longer needs fear of being“out of sight and out of mind.”He/she can be sure that the overseas effort is central to the company’s plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superiors will have greater confidence in his/her ability to cope back in the United States where cross-cultural considerations and foreign language issues are becoming more and more prevalent.
Thanks to a variety of relatively inexpensive communications devices with business applications, even small businesses in the United States are able to get into international markets.
English is still the international language of business. But there is an ever-growing need for people who can speak another language.A second language isn’t generally required to get a job in business, but having language skills gives a candidate the edge when other qualifications appear to be equal.
The employee posted abroad who speaks the country’s principal language has an opportunity to fast-forward certain negotiations, and can have the cultural insight to know when it is better to move more slowly. The employee at the home office who can communicate well with foreign clients over the telephone or by fax machine is an obvious asset to the firm.

3、Passage Three
IKEA is the world’s largest furniture retailer, and the man behind it is Ingvar Kamprad, one of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs.Born in Sweden in 1926,Kamprad was a natural businessman. As a child,he enjoyed selling things and made small profits from selling matches, seeds, and pencils in his community. When Kamprad was 17,his father gave him some money as a reward for his good grades.Naturally he used it to start up a business—IKEA.
IKEA’s name comes from Kamprad’s initials(I.K.)and the place where he grew up(‘E’and‘A’).Today IKEA is known for its modern, minimalist furniture, but it was not a furniture company in the beginning.Rather,IKEA sold all kinds of miscellaneous goods.Kamprad’s wares included anything that he could sell for profits at discounted prices, including watches, pens and stockings.
IKEA first began to sell furniture through a mail-order catalog in 1947.The furniture was all designed and made by manufacturers near Kamprad’s home.Initial sales were very encouraging,so Kamprad expanded the product line.Furniture was such a successful aspect of the business that IKEA became solely a furniture company in 1951.
In 1953 IKEA opened its first showroom in Almhult,Sweden.IKEA is known today for its spacious stores with furniture in attractive settings, but in the early 1950s,people ordered from catalogs. Thus response to the first showroom was overwhelming:people loved being able to see and try the furniture before buying it.This led to increased sales and the company continued to thrive.By 1955,IKEA was designing all its own furniture.
In 1956 Kamprad saw a man disassembling a table to make it easier to transport.Kamprad was inspired. The man had given him a great idea:flat packaging.Flat packaging would mean lower shipping costs for IKEA and lower prices for customers.IKEA tried it and sales soared. The problem was that people had to assemble the furniture themselves, but over time, even this grew into an advantage for IKEA.Nowadays,IKEA is often seen as having connotations of self-sufficiency.This image has done wonders for the company, leading to better sales and continued expansion.
Today there are over 200 stores in 32 countries.Amazingly,Ingvar Kamprad has managed to keep IKEA a privately-held company. In 2004 he was named the world’s richest man.He currently lives in Switzerland and is retired from the day-to-day operations of IKEA.IKEA itself, though, just keeps on growing.

4、Passage Four
Nationwide, only about 3%of early childhood teachers are male in the U.S.Experts say this can have an impact on young children whose understanding of gender roles and identity is rapidly forming.Research has found that having access to diverse teachers is beneficial for children. For the youngest learners,it means they are more likely to get exposed to different varieties of play and communication. It also helps them develop healthy ideas around gender.
“In our world and our society,we have very specific stereotypes(模式化形象)of gender roles,”said Mindi Reich-Shapiro,an assistant professor in the teacher education department of the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and one of the authors of a recent study.“It’s important for children to see other possibilities and other paths they can take.”
Despite mostly feeling supported by colleagues and family members, many of the male educators surveyed in the study reported facing social or cultural resistance in their careers as early education teachers. Some also reported that there were parents surprised or concerned that their children had a male teacher. And they had been advised by colleagues or other staff not to hug children.
Reich-Shapiro and fellow researchers made several recommendations to increase male representation in the field.Low pay has long been acknowledged as a major issue in the early childhood field.Over 70%of male educators who said they intended to stay in the early education workforce noted an increased salary was a major motivating factor for them to commit to the career long-term.The report suggests paying all early childhood educators the way elementary schoolteachers are paid.
Cities and programs should establish support groups for male early childhood educators and provide mentoring and professional development advice for male educators and their program leaders.
The authors also suggest that traditional recruitment approaches for early childhood educators“do not address the gender gap in the field.”They recommend providing young men opportunities to work with children through training and volunteer programs, targeting groups of men who are considering a career change, such as fathers.
1、F-46.What do we learn from the first paragraph about early childhood education in the U.S.?
A、It helps raise children’s awareness of gender roles.
B、It exposes children to different ways of interaction.
C、It is negatively impacted by a lack of male teachers.
D、It clearly aims to form children’s identity through play.
